DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS VIDEO PROJECT

  1. I especially like the beginning animation of your video. The information was very well thought out and delivered professionally. While watching your video I wonder how I could use the information you provided in media center to help students with critical thinking skills..

  2. Thank you. It was a pleasure to work with you guys on SKYPE last night. Perhaps the best way to help students develop their critical thinking skills in the media center would be to encourage creativity. Give them a project such as to create a video or PowerPoint about someone popular (if you do not want every rapper in the world, you will have to set that parameter), and let them collect pictures and bios to create a presentation. More challenging might be to introduce them to something like Webspiration or Inspiration, and have them structure their own graphic organizer regarding some objective that they have learned in one of their core classes. Introduce them to Photo Story (very easy to use) and let them create a timeline of major events that have occurred since the year that they were born. Generally, this provides an opportunity for them to relate with 9-1-1, which for some reason is a little known historical even for the students of today. We should not let them forget this tragedy. ~~C. Penny Penagraph

  3. I especially liked the topic critical thinking. Like I said in our conversation on I think critical thinking skills are very important to develop in students. Your clear presentation of the six ways to develop critical thinking was very successful. While viewing your presentation I began to wonder about developing critical thinking skills at the high school level. I want to do research on the topic to determine how I can help my students develop critical thinking skills. The content was well thought out and I liked how you filmed yourself for your presentation. I would like to suggest maybe using a movie making program to insert words.

  4. Penny,

Nice topic. I think critical thinking is lacking in schools today. I would suspect one of the reasons is because it isn't easily measurable or observable. When you had mentioned using in-class debates to develop critical thinking, I think back to using this method in my classroom. The activity was called "agree/disagree." In different corners of the classroom, posters were put up with "agree, disagree, strongly agree, strongly disagree." A topic was given and then students had to move towards a corner of the room depending on their opinion. We then had a brief debate about the topic. This can apply to really any and all subjects and is a great way to incorporate critical thinking skills in a lesson.

It was a pleasure speaking to you on Skype last week!

  5. Thank you for suggesting to use the movie making software. Do not think that I did not try already. I could not get it to work. I ended up cutting a half of my presentation to finally meet the deadline. Maybe next time. ~C. Penny Penagraph

  6. Jeff, thanks for the comments as well. I did enjoy speaking with you guys. In our campus leaders' meeting this morning, the principal told us that next year she has arranged for us to have 30-minutes each day for technology tutoring. Of course, we have to create platforms that tie into the core subjects, but it is another step in our upward move on the static vs dynamic scale. ~C. Penny Penagraph

  7. Penny,
I enjoyed your presentation. I teach first grade and my little ones are still at the very begining stages of thinking. THey still want a right or wrong response. You examples of ways to foster critical thinking skills was very helpful. THanks for the information.

  8. Penny,

Your points are well taken and valuable to the efforts necessary for successful education. During your research, did you find many items that refute the idea that critical thinking skills must be developed?

  9. Penny,
I especially like your description of what are critical thinking skill. I was thinking during your presentation how would I design a lesson which incorporates these points in a student led activity, any suggestions? Hopefully, I will see you in future classes. Monica
